Hebrew is written right to left with 22 letters, all of them consonants. Five of those letters change shape when they end a word โ the sofit forms โ which is why you will meet 27 shapes in print. Vowels are normally not written at all in everyday Hebrew; they exist as small marks (nikud) used in children's books, poetry and prayer books. Three letters, ื ื ืค, are read two different ways depending on whether they carry a dot (dagesh), and both readings are covered here with their own audio.

Frequently asked questions
How many letters are in the Hebrew alphabet?
22 letters. Five of them โ ื ื ื ืค ืฆ โ take a different final shape at the end of a word (ื ื ื ืฃ ืฅ), so you learn 27 shapes in total. Each one has its own page here.
Is Hebrew written right to left?
Yes. Text runs right to left, and a Hebrew book opens from what an English reader would call the back. Numbers written with digits are the exception โ they still read left to right inside the line.
Do I need to learn the vowel points (nikud)?
Everyday Hebrew โ newspapers, signs, websites โ is written without them, and readers supply the vowels from knowing the word. Nikud is worth learning early because it is what beginner material, dictionaries and religious texts use.
Why do some letters have two sounds?
ื ื ืค are read as b/k/p when they carry a dot (dagesh) and as v/kh/f without it โ bet vs vet, kaf vs khaf, pe vs fe. Their letter pages show both forms side by side, each with its own audio.
Is this site free?
Yes. Every letter page, the audio and the interactive practice app are free in the browser. There is a mobile app too if you would rather practise offline.
